TAIWAN REFOCUS

WEN CHENG LEE

Short for Taiwanese, the Chinese word “Tai” (台) was once looked down upon as tacky, unrefined, and inferior. Yet, Taiwanese visual artist Wen Cheng Lee has set out to reclaim that label, dubbing himself “Super Tai” Wen Cheng Lee! His embracing of this term with negative connotations has driven other peoples and cultures to reshape their original perspective of Taiwan, while leading Taiwanese people to build a new understanding of their own culture.

Using animation to illustrate common sights in Taiwan, such as store signs or buildings, Lee transforms this urban monster into artistic pieces that everyone can relate to. From power plants to harbours, this ingenious artist highlights his concern and care about the environment and history within his art. You’ll see Taiwan’s multiculturalism and the creativity of Taiwanese artists in Lee’s blends of traditional Taiwanese culture, modern technology, and diverse range of art pieces. Through his art, you’ll be instantly whisked back to a familiar Taiwan, but look closer, and you’ll see a whole new face of Taiwan!
