Fashion Hall of Fame
Taiwan’s blossoming creativity is also evident in the wearable art, from wedding gowns to a Taiwanese young designer Jason Wu designing for First Lady of US, Mrs. Obama. Besides putting on a fashion show to showcase the designs of Goji Lin on the runway, TAIWANfest is also having an exhibit of wedding and couture dresses in this Fashion Hall of Fame.
Taiwanese immigrant Sandra Sung is one of Canada's most prolific bridal designers based in Vancouver. In 2001 Eaton’s had Sandra’s salons in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto and shortly after her designs were made available from New York to Seattle. With the belief that brides themselves should be the center of the attention in the wedding instead accessory to the bridal gowns, Sandra designs wedding dresses that are simple yet elegant instead of the elaborate styles. She prides herself on using only the finest fabrics such as silk satin, silk organza and peau de soie, complimented with exquisite detailing. One of her signature is the use of rose petals on the gown while she also pioneered the use of colors other than bright white.
The featured designer of the “Clash: Taiwan’s Revolutionary Runway” Goji Lin will also have a dress displayed. Started out as a mechanical engineering graduate, Goji Lin revolutionizes the design of couture dresses by marrying seemingly conflict concepts such as fusing Eastern tradition with Western cutting or material. The back of the dress on display will be hanged from the ceiling with additional 52 clothes on them to signifying the continuation of life’s journey with 52 weeks in a year over and over.
A Behind the Scene Story
I saw a glimpse of the new Taiwan fashion in Goji Lin's studio. In such a small space exists so much creativity, allowing the traditional beauty to grow vigorously in a free atmosphere. Growing up in a farming family, Lin now uses his mechanical engineering background to help design new possibilities for women, and, at the same time, discover the endless nutrients for his creations in his very own homeland.
