Sweet Engagement

In Taiwan, it’s customary for groom-to-be to give engagement sweets as one of the several gifts that he has to present to his fiancée.  Upon receiving the sweets, the bride delivers them to her relatives, friends and neighbors, as a way of announcing her engagement. The sweets signify happy moments to last and also wish the couple to have sons born into the family. Traditionally the sweets are like bigger moon cakes with sweet filling and auspicious symbols and paintings such as "Double Happiness" or pictures of dragons on the surface. Nowadays younger generation like to choose Western style pastries and cookies. They are often extravagantly wrapped and come in small sizes and wide range of favors in beautifully ornate boxes.

TAIWANfest will have these engagement sweet on display with the wedding banquet in the “What’s cooking” session. Audience will have a chance to taste some samples.
