A Journey Told Through the Lens of Films

Movies made in Taiwan have achieved some records in the box office in Taiwan, like "Cape No. 7" is only second to "Titanic" in box office sale since the second half of last year. The flourishing creativity in Taiwan's film industry prompted TAIWANfest to introduce a few highly acclaimed movies to Canada. In Vancouver, TAIWANfest is partnering with Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) to bring them up to the big screen in VanCity Theatre while these movies will be played in Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Taiwan's movies have been quite established internationally. Besides the well known Ang Lee, Edward Yang attended VIFF many times himself and was highly respected and recommended in the local film circle.
Movies provide not only entertainment; it also is a window to the scenery and culture of a place. The stories they told through the lens often may be the answer to what people are seeking of life, outlet for emotional expression or peace of mind people are searching for.
"Island Etude" is one of the movies that tells such a story. The most memorable quote of the story that still touches many people is when the character said "Something in life is such that if you don’t do it now, you will miss out the opportunity forever to experience them." The main character decided to tour the island with his bicycle regardless of his hearing disability. Along this journey, he saw the scenery of various beauties, met all kinds of people and encountered challenges and kindness. He realized his dream and he grew to know himself better.
Watching a movie is a journey. It is a journey about Taiwan; it's also a journey about oneself. TAIWANfest invites everyone to go on a journey with these movies.
